New barrier technology developed in Africa

March 30, 2019

The African Science and Technology Research Council (CSIR) has developed an oxygen barrier coating technology for PET and PP bottles. This coating technique, known as Oxyplete, is a method of spraying or impregnating after the surface has been treated with fluorination, corona discharge, or plasma. It is said that the barrier property is 30 times that of an uncoated PET bottle, and it has "aesthetic appeal". Oxyplete can be used for cold filling or hot filling and has no adverse effect when recycled. CSIR claims that Oxyplete is better than other passive barrier technologies that are currently in use, and that prices are competitive with other barrier technologies.
